Flying house!

They made this house fly with balloons like in Up! I really want to fly via balloons some day.

I love this guy

He's like eighty something and rides his bike all around the city taking pictures.

I find these oddly inspiring. Perhaps because they make fun of G.I. Joe?

UNBELIEVABLE

Chuck Close is the artist for those who are unfamiliar. Is it a picture? Or a drawing?! Look up more of his stuff it's spectacular!

Briar Rose

Okay, some of you might say I am a cartoon. This is a valid statement. How did it come to be you ask? How did I end up with only art credits in my three years of high school? The answer, my friends, is that I was strongly influenced at an early age. My brain went through the Disney washer machine. Sleeping Beauty is the reason.

Look at the detail! The back round! The artistry! The smokin hot dress and luscious locks! True love <3

Get Messy With Your Painting

Here is a cool painting style I discovered. It looks messy, but It'd sure be fun to try!

Fingerhut Gallery

Earlier this year, my family and I took a trip to California. One of the days, we spent at Laguna Beach. There are tons of art galleries in the town and I happened to check this one out. There was a lot of cool artwork at the Fingerhut Gallery, Including many original Dr. Seuss paintings and sculptures. I also came across an artist named Andrew Baird at the gallery. His paintings are created by dripping paint, to make portraits. here's a lovely little link. Check it out.

Hamlet

These are a few of my favorite lines from Hamlet that I think are really inspiring and beautiful

"Why, then 'tis none to you; for there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
To me it is a prison."

Why then your ambition makes it one: 'tis too narrow for your mind.

O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a
king of infinite space—were it not that I have bad dreams.

Which dreams indeed are ambition; for the very substance of the ambitious is merely the shadow of a dream

a dream itself is but a shadow

hope you enjoyed them as much as I did

Alan Moore

So basically they were talking about Alan Moore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Moore)
on NPR and they mentioned a quote by him about how art is magic and magic is art, and I just kind of thought about how we discuss the definition of art but what about the definition of magic:

mag·ic

[maj-ik] Show IPA
noun
1.
the art of producing illusions as entertainment by the use of sleight of hand, deceptive devices, etc.; legerdemain; conjuring: to pull a rabbit out of a hat by magic.
2.
the art of producing a desired effect or result through the use of incantation or various other techniques that presumably assure human control of supernatural agencies or the forces of nature. Compare contagious magic, imitative magic, sympathetic magic

Kind of interesting how they are interrelated

"There is some confusion as to what magic actually is. I think this can be cleared up if you just look at the very earliest descriptions of magic. Magic in its earliest form is often referred to as “the art”.  I believe this is completely literal.  I believe that magic is art and that art, whether it be writing, music, sculpture, or any other form is literally magic.  Art is, like magic, the science of manipulating symbols, words, or images, to achieve changes in consciousness.  The very language about magic seems to be talking as much about writing or art as it is about supernatural events.  A grimmoir for example, the book of spells is simply a fancy way of saying grammar.  Indeed, to cast a spell, is simply to spell, to manipulate words, to change people's consciousness.   And I believe that this is why an artist or writer is the closest thing in the contemporary world that you are likely to see to a Shaman."

it started at the locust salon

Here's a review in SLUG of my cd, Lalage. The reviewer got one detail wrong--all sounds were live. There was no post-production manipulation of sound.

Just so you know, we developed this duo at the salon. So who knows what you guys will start at your show Friday night? I can't wait to find out!

Locust Salon Planning

So far we have about half an hour of performances, but only Libby, Sofia, Ariel, Hayli, Shannon and Mari are involved. A couple of you have beginning ideas, but nothing solid. So send me an email telling me what you are planning to do and I will add it to the schedule.
Thanks!

ps if you have any wall hanging or just display pieces let me know.

A Personal Piece

This is one of my personal art pieces. A stencil of the musician Tom Waits. this guy is made entirely out of gum wrappers. I'm not going to disclose my secrets, but from start to finish, it takes about seven hours to complete one of these pieces.

oh, and you have to wear sunglasses while doing it, or the light reflecting off the gum wrappers starts to hurt your eyes pretty badly.

Eizabeth Peyton, The Artist I Wish I Was

From Ariel:

i feel like she paints in a way that started out like, "ya im not an 'artist' because i dont make things kodak style, instead i abstract and simplify, add my own twist and flaunt my 'weakness' that turned into my strength" {inspiration}. Elz (yes we're on personal terms) isnt worried about every little shape being cookie cutter perfect. AMAZING

Waterfall House

From Ariel:

TITLE: Waterfall House
DESCRIPTION: *sparked by shans post* Frank Lloyd Wright's whole inspiration of his architecture is working with nature. he makes a point that we dont need to turn forests into slaughter houses in order to have homes, or amazing buildings. who wouldnt want to live in that?!?!?! my dream is to live there. {inspirationnnnn}

Where I wish my mind lived.

Women Art Revolution

An art historian from BYU is hosting a screening of Women Art Revolution at her house Saturday night, December 10th at 7 p.m. She has invited interested parties to attend.

Here's a brief description of this award winning film: Through intimate interviews, art, and rarely seen archival film and video footage, Women Art Revolution reveals how the Feminist Art Movement fused free speech and politics into an art that radically transformed the art and culture of our times.

Message Lara if you want to attend.

Paper Art Sculpting by Kris Trappeniers — a stencil artist based in Belgium. As can be seen in the papercut of the womans head (above), Kris uses a sharp scalpel to create stunning paper art ‘sculptures’.
I thought this was crazy with was only made with one piece of paper I've always wanted to make something like this, but I have never tried using and Exacto knife in my life so I'm not to sure I can just yet.

This artist/poet took facimiles of Emily Dickinson manuscripts and stitched the "incidental" marks from her pen into large scale wall hangings. She then created limited edition books. They're very beautiful and inspired by one of my favorite poets.

Petit Plat miniatures

Okay, these are just so freaking cute. Basically this lady makes 1:32 scaled miniature food items. Some of them are just for enjoyment or like putting into dollhouses but some of them she makes into jewelry. And basically they're really expensive, or I would own them all.

Also this is really sweet. I get anxious watching it like "NO! NOT THAT COLOUR!" and "NO ONE TOUCH THE BOX!" But it works you know? Really fun to watch. I like it cause it messes with the "what is art" idea.
